What Will Make You Upgrade to 2019 iPhone 11?

In around two months from now, Apple will unveil the 2019 iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max. Thanks to leaks though, we already have a good idea of what to expect from these smartphones.

While Apple used to follow the tick-tock upgrade cycle for iPhone upgrades where every alternative iPhone release was a major upgrade, that is no longer the case. The iPhone XS and XS Max were modest upgrades and if the leaks are anything to go by, the 2019 iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max are also going to be about major internal changes.

As per the leaks, below are the major hardware changes that the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max will pack:

Faster A13 Bionic chip

Triple-camera system

Improved TrueDepth camera system

Frosted rear glass panel

Single slab of glass at the rear which will also protect the camera sensors

Reverse Wireless Charging

Bigger Battery

Apart from the inclusion of an ultra-wide angle camera, it does not look like the iPhone 11 series is going to pack any major improvements or a breakthrough feature. Plus, all these features are something that is already available on other flagship Android smartphones. These are just yearly upgrades that Apple is making to stay with the curve instead of leapfrogging it or reinventing it.

The ultra-wide angle shooter is definitely going to be a useful addition if you are someone who takes a lot of photos. It will let you capture scenes with a whole new perspective. Apple is also rumored to add some useful software features that would take advantage of the ultra-wide angle shooter. However, these improvements alone are simply not going to be enough to make people upgrade to the iPhone 11.

The inclusion of reverse wireless charging and bigger battery on the iPhone 11 series is going to be a major highlight from Apple’s viewpoint. While reverse wireless charging sounds cool on paper, it has limited real-life use. For people with AirPods and the Qi wireless charging case, reverse wireless charging case is definitely going to be useful. But then, not everyone owns a pair of AirPods along with the wireless charging case. While longer battery life will be a welcome addition, I doubt it is going to be enough to get hoards of existing iPhone users to upgrade to it.

In comparison, the 2020 iPhone is looking like a major upgrade. Apple is expected to revamp the display size across the lineup, add 5G connectivity, and a ToF sensor for advanced AR/VR features. These are changes that would be beneficial for the end consumers and not just ‘paper’ improvements.

Until and unless Apple adds some really useful software features that will be exclusive to the iPhone 11, we are looking at a really modest iPhone refresh that won’t be worth upgrading to. What would make you upgrade to the 2019 iPhone 11? Are all the leaked improvements going to be good enough? Or are you going to hold onto your current iPhone for another year?

2019 MacBook Air’s SSD Has Slower Read Speeds Compared to 2018 Model

Earlier this month, Apple updated the MacBook Air lineup with True Tone support and lowered its price tag by $100 while at it. At first glance, it looked like these were all the changes that Apple had made. However, as testing by Consomac reveals, the 2019 MacBook Air features a slower SSD than the outgoing model.

As testing reveals, the 2019 256GB MacBook Air features read and write speeds of 1.3GB/s and 1GB/s, respectively. While that’s still pretty darn fast, the read speeds are slower by almost 35% when compared to the 2018 MacBook Air which is capable of reaching speeds of up to 2GB/s. Its read speeds are slightly lower at 920MB/sec though.

The SSD speed drop seems to be limited to the 256GB variant of the 2019 MacBook Air as the 128GB model performs about the same as its predecessor. It offered read/write speeds of 1.3GB/s and 500MB/s which is about the same as the 2018 model. Also read:cricfree alternatives

It is possible that Apple used an SSD with slower read speeds to reduce component cost and thereby help it in reducing the overall price of the machine.

While disappointing, the slower read speeds of the 2019 MacBook Air’s SSD is not going to have a major impact in real-life performance. The bottleneck will be first created by the low-power Intel processor instead of the SSD which still offers blazing-fast performance compared to the industry standard. Plus, it is the write speeds that usually matter the most and the slightly faster speeds in that regard should end up having a positive impact in certain scenarios.
