The first method to recover unsaved word document is looking for the auto recovery folder. If your Mac is running the Office 2016, then you can find the auto saved files in the following path:

To find the location, click on the ‘Go’ menu in the Finder. Next, select the Go to Folder and then simply paste this address:

~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery/

To ensure it work, you should change the document format from .doc to .docx so that they open up in the MS Word app.

If your Mac is running the older Microsoft Office version, you can take advantage of the ‘Auto recovery folder’ . You can find it at the following patch:

If you are running the in MS Office 2008, 2009 or 2011, the Auto Recovery folder is found in a different way:
